We never intended to be the parents of a pig, but looking back on it now, there is not one thing I would change.
A family two doors down, who had become friends of ours, had a little girl named Ella. Ella had become sick and, after multiple doctor’s visits, wasn’t getting any better. There was finally the dreaded diagnosis of stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Ella fought hard for several months, but eventually, the family was told that nothing more could be done and sent Ella home on hospice. One day, in talking to Ella’s dad, I asked him what the one thing was that she wanted more than anything in the world. To my surprise, he said, “A pig.” So, I set my sights on making that happen.
After contacting a local mini-pig farm, I was told they had one left that was ready to go, and they offered a deep discount upon hearing Ella’s story. Arrangements were made to pick up the baby pig the next day. That evening, I got a call from Ella’s dad, and he told me that Ella had taken a turn for the worst and that if she was going to meet her new pig, it needed to be soon. I quickly contacted the pig farm, and the owner agreed to meet me as soon as possible.
My son and I went to pick up this little squealing and super upset pig and drove her 45 minutes back to meet her new mom, Ella. When we entered the house, this baby pig was all wrapped up in a blanket, and we slowly stepped around the corner to make the introduction. Ella’s eyes lit up, and she kissed her new little pig and rubbed her ear. When her mom asked what she wanted to name her, Ella didn’t even have to think about it. She said, “Bella.”
Over the next several days, we became the babysitters of Bella when the family had to focus on Ella. On Ella’s good days, Bella and I would walk over with Cheerios and sit on her bed so she could feed her some Cheerios. Ella fought for over a month but passed away. The family had so much to deal with, along with an overwhelming grief, that Bella’s sleepovers at our house became permanent.
After a short family conversation, we decided Bella would stay and become our family, which is what we thought Ella would want. Bella was affectionately given Ella’s middle name, “Grace,” and was from then on known as “Bella Grace.” Bella Grace did get bigger than we anticipated, but she remained a very spoiled indoor house pig. She became accustomed to a leash and harness and also went on every camping trip with us. Nearly 9 years later, Bella Grace began panting and grinding her teeth and seemed to be in distress. It was nearly 10 PM, and we weren’t sure what was wrong. We all gathered around her, and within minutes, she was gone. Bella Grace is now with Ella Grace, I am certain.
The memories we made with this pig will always remain close to my heart. Because of Ella, we became pig parents, and I wouldn’t change a thing. I hope Ella is giving her plenty of belly rubs because that was her favorite.
